A Fairway Independent Mortgage branch in Madison, Wisconsin, partnered with the American Warrior Initiative (AWI) to honor two veterans with a service dog. In collaboration with the event, a residential housing “Boot Camp” was also held to train real estate professionals on how to handle the home purchase needs of active duty and military veterans with excellence.
The honorees at the event were Don and Morgana Mulder. Don was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army in 1982 and was honorably discharged in 1996 after serving in the Gulf War. Don has been rated 90% disabled by the VA as he has lost hearing in his right ear and a portion of his eyesight. Don also suffers from PTSD and is recovering from shoulder surgery. Don’s wife, Morgana, is a Navy Iraq combat veteran. Morgana has also been rated 90% disabled by the VA as she is suffering from PTSD, has many health problems, and is a breast cancer survivor.
Don and Morgana received a service dog from Custom Canines that will help them tremendously with everyday life. Additionally, Custom Canines donated a service dog named Kevlar to be raised and trained to work within the Wisconsin National Guard’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program (SAPR). Kevlar is a black Labrador retriever who will be the protégé of the “top dog” in the Custom Canines program. He will learn the ins and outs of assisting service members and veterans who are survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence.
Branch Manager Joe Theisen, was so happy to have been able to take part in honoring these special veterans. He said,
“We were honored to host the American Warrior Initiative in Madison and welcome many of our realtor partners in joining us to learn how we can all help and give back to military families. It was special to have Louise Thaxton and Sean Parnell here to teach our team and our business partners the impact of serving those who have served our country. This special day included providing a service dog to a deserving military veteran, to know this will have a significant positive impact on the daily life for this veteran and his family gives us a great pride in being able to give back to those that protected us and allow us to do what we do every day. THANK YOU to all veterans for your service, with the sincerest of gratitude!”
The American Warrior Initiative is a national non-profit organization sponsored by Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation. AWI seeks to ease the transition for U.S. veterans between military and civilian life.
I am proud to work for a company who is a proud supporter of the American military and has helped thousands of active military personnel and veterans nationwide with their home mortgage needs. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to give back to these brave veterans and their families.
