Outdoor rugs can add style and functionality to patios, outdoor kitchens, and other outdoor living spaces. A simple, brightly colored rug is an easy way to make any outdoor living space feel more welcoming. Many spring trends for outdoor rugs include bold colors, patterns, and floral designs. Here are some tips on choosing and maintaining the best outdoor rug for your space:
Material – Nylon, polyester, polypropylene, bamboo, and jute are very popular materials for outdoor rugs. Bamboo and jute are best used under a covered area, as moisture can cause the fibers to break down; while nylon, polyester, and polypropylene are more durable against sun and rain. Many outdoor rugs are treated to be resistant to mildew and moisture as well as UV protected.
Size – The size of your rug will depend largely on the layout of your living space. If you choose a smaller rug, make sure that all of your furniture is placed fully on the rug. If you have a table with chairs, it is best if the chairs remain on the rug even when they are pulled out. If you choose a larger rug, make sure that it does not overlap onto another surface.
Maintenance – While most outdoor rugs are created to handle rain and humidity, it is still important to hang them over a railing to dry out. It is also important to vacuum or sweep your outdoor rug regularly to prevent dirt from being embedded deep into the fibers.
