puyallup-photoThe American Warrior Initiative (AWI) and Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation partnered to honor a veteran with a service dog in Puyallup, Washington. A “Boot Camp” was held in collaboration with the event to educate real estate professionals on working with the home purchase needs of active duty and military veterans with excellence.

The honoree was Mike Olson, a highly decorated Vietnam infantry veteran and Staff Sergeant in the 5th Infantry Division. Mike was wounded several times during his service and medically retired in 1988. After Mike returned from Vietnam, he struggled with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). With the gift of a service dog, Mike will be able to find relief from PTSD. He commented:

“With the dog, I will be able to venture out on my own, know that he will help mitigate my hypervigilance and panic attacks, turn on the light when I have those combat nightmares, and bring me present during flashbacks. He will also provide Lynn relief by shouldering some of the weight with which she has been burdened for many years.”

The American Warrior Initiative is the giving arm of Fairway. AWI seeks to ease the transition for U.S. veterans between military and civilian life. The mission of the American Warrior Initiative is to inspire, educate and give back to our military and their families.
