Have you ever been driving away from home with the nagging feeling that you left the iron on or been on your way to the airport asking yourself things like Did I turn off the lights? or Did I set the alarm system? “Smart homes” can allay your worries with just a glance at your phone.
Technology that was once considered a luxury for the wealthy and tech savvy is now becoming more popular in a consumer market across North America. Media Post reported from Berg Insight that the number of smart homes in North America reached 13 million in 2015, a growth of 56% from 2014. Berg Insight also stated that smart home growth is predicted to reach 46 million within four years.
Smart homes provide owners comfort, security, energy efficiency and convenience at all times. Most smart homes allow you to connect and control all electrical devices and appliances to your home network and access them through a smart phone or tablet. While current smart homes are defined as homes with devices that can be accessed remotely and have the capability of communicating with one another, the future of smart homes is unseen.
One popular company creating smart home technology is Nest. Nest creates cameras, smoke alarms and thermostats that remember settings, can be accessed from your smart phone and work together to sense motion in the home. Other companies adopting the technology are Philips Lighting, Honeywell, Belkin, Amazon and more.
